What Size Netball Should My Child Use? A Straightforward Guide by School Year

Shopping for a netball shouldn’t feel like a school exam, but when sizes 4 and 5 are staring you down and your child’s somewhere between Year 4 and the Silver Ferns, things get confusing fast.

At Pure Sports & Leisure, we get it — and we’ve put together this handy guide to take the guesswork out of netball sizing, using school year groups instead of ages (because let’s be honest, that’s how most of us keep track!).

Netball Parent Pitfalls (We’ve Seen Them All)

❌ “She’ll grow into it”
Sure, but in the meantime, she can’t catch it properly. Starting with the correct size makes learning way easier.

❌ Buying the wrong size for school or club
Some schools use size 4 well into Year 6. If you're unsure, check with the coach or flick us a message – we’re happy to help.

❌ Assuming all balls are the same
Training balls, match balls, indoor, outdoor – the options can be overwhelming. We'll guide you to the right pick.

✅ Pro Tips from the Sidelines

  • Years 1–6: Go for Size 4. Lightweight and manageable for smaller hands.

  • Year 7 and up: Size 5 all the way. That’s the match standard across New Zealand netball.

  • Check grip: A good training ball will have a nice textured grip, making it easier to learn the basics.

  • Need help? Our team at Pure Sports & Leisure is always here to chat, online or in-store.

Game On!

Picking the right size netball might seem small, but it can make a huge difference in how confident and successful your child feels on the court. Whether they’re learning to chest pass in Year 3 or smashing goals in Year 12, we’ve got the gear (and advice) to help them shine.

Visit us in Waipukurau or shop online — we’ve got netballs in the right size, right price, and ready to ship!
